Add your Britishisms to 'So You Think You Speak English'

OK, since the semester began, we at The Manor Mouse have given you about 50 examples of English words and phrases they use here in the U.K. that we'd never use in the same way in America.

Now it's your turn. We bet every one of you has come across several examples of how to speak English in ways we never learned in the United States, and this is the place to list them -- with the American translations, as best you can tell -- for the edification of all of us here and across the pond.

WHY is Obama, Clinton or McCain your favorite for president?

OK, the Harlaxton mock election results are in, but that only tells us so much. Why do you think Sen. Obama won? Why do you think he's the best candidate for president of the United States? Or why do you think Sen. McCain is? Or why do you think Sen. Clinton is -- or Ralph Nader?

Let's see the reasoning behind your vote. After all, there's still plenty of time to change each others' minds before we head home to the United States and cast our real votes in November.

In our story this week, we told of one Harlaxton student's potentially expensive mistake in overflowing his shower in a North Wales hotel on a school trip. Have you been an "ugly American" in your travels? And what have you learned from it?.

In my article about study habits at Harlaxton, I showed you a few common (and some not so common) study spots around the manor. Did I include your favorite place to study? Where do you think the best areas around the manor are to study? What makes them good places to read or write?

Also, what makes studying for classes at Harlaxton different than those you take at home?

The Manor Mouse: Second Issue

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Your present from the COMM 251:Web Design class at Harlaxton College in England is now live online at:

http://www.harlaxton.ac.uk/TheManorMouse

In this second issue of The Manor Mouse we've gone a little Hollywood, with stories featuring audio-video clips of:

Our beloved Associate Dean of Students Bronwyn Rout singing part of the Australian national anthem

One of our students kissing the Blarney Stone, giving her eternal eloquence, during last week's trip to Ireland

A native telling us how to pronounce the longest place name in Europe: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch

And we still have plenty of news stories and photos, too, providing the latest on the repairs to the ceiling of Harlaxton's largest room, a rundown on the persistent ghost stories floating around, an interview with Gordon and Suzanne Kingsley, and a look at all the flowers already beginning to bloom here! We even have a new link to the BBC weather report here -- with temperatures in Farenheit!

In the next issue, which we plan to publish two weeks from today, we'll add blogs about all manner of happenings here. Meanwhile, please e-mail me your comments, questions or corrections for The Manor Mouse.

Thanks for reading -- and watching!

Mike Dorsher, Ph.D.,
